Rider Level Workshops and Testing Information
The Learn to Ride program/Rider Level Program is designed to be guided by a Certified Instructor or Coach, to ensure that the concepts are clearly understood before the rider progresses to more challenging levels. The program provides an opportunity for riders to progress, demonstrating their skills through a series of increasingly complex written tests, interviews and under-saddle jump and flat tests. The purpose is to give riders an opportunity to learn not only how to ride but also learn everything else there is to know about the horses and equipment and owning and taking care of a horse. It is a way to ensure that all across Canada students get the opportunity to lean a standard of knowledge and get recognized for their achievements. It is a great first step to future work in any equine related field, great on a resume for those students who hope to work in a barn, and the first part of being able to someday coach other riders.
The riding program at EAA is based on the rider level program and students will be moved forward into more advanced levels when their coach feels that they have met the requirements to SAFELY move on. Each level should take at least 1- 2 years to complete
EAA provides Rider Level Workshops that are designed for ALL students at varying levels of knowledge. These workshops have 3 goals:
1) to provide an opportunity for riders to develop their interest in and love for horses
2) to provide an opportunity to develop skills to work SAFELY around the horses
3) to provide the learning opportunity to develop and practice the knowledge required to participate in the testing program
The rider level workshops are on foot (no riding) for 2 hours- see calendar of events for dates and times- 25$
The Equine Canada has a series of books/study guides that provide all the information , study guides and rubrics to help prepare students for testing They are available for purchase at this website: ontarioequestrian.ca/product-category/manuals
TESTING
This involves a series of 3 tests for each Rider Level:
1) written test- these will be completed at least a month prior to the other two phases
2) stable management- this is an in person practical test that involves showing and explaining skills/knowledge to the evaluator
3) riding phase on the flat and jumping
It is important to understand that testing is NOT REQUIRED to move on in our riding program and that we ONLY test at a level where the student should be VERY comfortable with the skills. For example...a student who is in a Rider Level 3 group should be able to do a Rider Level 2 test
Laura is providing testing to RL3. After that level the evaluator will be brought in for testing
